A very dangerous scene happened in Guangdong, China when a man drove his car into a tunnel on April 14th, 2020.
The first part of this video shows a man driving into a tunnel where a woman is pushing a stroller with a baby inside. It was very hard for human eyes to adjust to the darkness, so when the driver saw this woman, the car was very close to her.
Fortunately the driver was able to make a sudden brake! Everyone watching the video is frightened into cold sweat.
How would a self-driving car deal with the similar scenarios?
WeRide robotaxi has 360-degree Field of View sensor suite fusing LiDAR, radar and camera at the top of the vehicle, detecting up to 250 meters away even at night, in tunnels, under sun flare or strong reflection.
The latter part of the video above, WeRide robotaxi detected in advance a pedestrian and a car in front despite the strong light of the vehicle from the opposite direction.
If WeRide robotaxi comes across the same scenarios as the driver did, its sensor suite would be able to detect the woman and the stroller even before entering the tunnel and plan a route to avoid collision.
Self-driving technology can bring safer and more convinient mobility service to human beings. Full self-driving is on the way, but before that, let’s all stay safe and responsible on the road.
